Melbourne, Australia - 22 June 2009 - - Haliplex Pty Ltd, a leading developer of telecommunication solutions in the Utilities and Public Transportation sector, has released a software upgrade to its HPX-800 series MSPP and the associated windows-based element management system HPXView. The new Service Pack - Version 5.4.0 - provides the ability to monitor and therefore manage the SFP modules used as fibre-optic interfaces via the DDMI (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface).

“The use of SFPs (Small Form Pluggable) transceiver devices has become widespread within telecommunications and network infrastructure in recent years” said Richard Cookes, CEO. “These devices form a significant part of the asset cost of a network but the laser in the optical form of the SFP has a limited lifetime and must be monitored, maintained and replaced periodically”. he continued.

Mr Cookes explained that DDMI provides a way to monitor key operating parameters of SFPs such as Received Optical Power and Transmitter Laser Bias current. DDMI is a standard adopted by SFP manufacturers through the Multi Source Agreement for SFPs (SFF-8472). Adoption of these standards ensures the broadest support for SFPs across many manufacturers.

“Tracking laser Transmitter current over time allows prediction of impending failure. If monitored on a geographic basis the network operator can coordinate SFP swap-outs in an area and reduce 'truck rolls' to remote locations” he said. “Network operators are now able to proactively plan for device replacement before failure can cause network outages. The feature can also flag SFP insertion or removal which, along with the device serial number, allows location of individual SFPs for asset tracking purposes” Cookes added.

The upgrade also includes a new feature that provides the ability to remotely and automatically initiate a backup of configuration and system information for each element. By integrating the use of this mechanism with their NMS, a network operator can be sure that network configuration can be restored in the event of a network disaster or other failure.
