Haliplex Communication Systems, a designer and manufacturer of access networking solutions, today announced the launch of two products that allow network operators to provide Ethernet over SDH/SONET services utilizing existing networking assets.

The HPX-300-SS-T, a Multi-Service Provision Platform product, is specifically tailored to allow carriers and service providers in Asia to extend the optical domain to the untapped SME and residential markets. This technology will also provide network operators in the utilities, oil and gas industries with an ‘all-in-one’ solution to connect internal telemetry and office systems. The HPX-300-SS-T is designed for simple delivery of the latest technology and other traditional carrier services through a single standards-based provisioning platform.

In conjunction with the HPX-300-SS-T, Haliplex is also announcing the new Ethernet Haliplex Interface Module (HIM). Ethernet is the connectivity of choice today for most new value-added services, and SDH/SONET has been the most widely adopted infrastructure in service providers in the last several decades. The HPX-300-SS-T makes it possible for carriers to build on their existing SDH/SONET infrastructure and with the new Ethernet HIM, service providers can effectively penetrate the SME and residential markets with simple yet low-cost Ethernet connectivity that this sector can afford.

The technology behind HPX-300-SS-T was developed out of Asia after taking into consideration the various challenges that network operators are facing. As the big corporate markets become saturated, carriers are trying to reach out to the SME and residential markets. In order to do so successfully, several issues have to be addressed. The Haliplex solution resolves major concerns of network operators, such as operational simplicity, management and billing, physical space and scalability.

“We have taken the radical step to pioneer this strategy out of Asia. By allowing carriers here to expand on existing infrastructure, they can now effectively provide more services to the SMEs and subsequently increase revenues and profitability,” said Alan Kepper, President of Haliplex Communication Systems. “As the Europe and U.S. network operators start looking more to Asia and gradually adopting a similar approach, we are positive about the penetration of Haliplex solutions into the global markets.”

Operational simplicity

HPX-300-SS-T connects to existing network infrastructure and existing systems. This minimizes the amount of change and contributes to operational simplicity. It also simplifies new network implementations requiring less equipment and install time.

This facilitates successful implementation and operation of new infrastructure systems and processes needed to provide current and new services.

Management and Billing

HPX-300-SS-T allows interconnection of the old and new access systems, hence there is no change in the management and billing systems that carriers are currently deploying.

Physical space

HPX-300-SS-T is physically the smallest of this type in the world. This is a critical consideration for carriers if they want to reach out to the SME and residential markets where operators are challenged by rentals of expensive rack space in congested locations.

Scalability

Associated with the HPX-300 series set of boxes is a set of cards that provide connectivity to most communications technology – both for traditional services and for new services. These Haliplex Interface Modules (HIMs) are designed to withstand and handle the rougher physical conditions of the SME and residential access networks. The HPX-300-SS-T with the Ethernet HIM allows easy plug-and-play Ethernet connectivity for the SME and residential markets.

Though developed with Asia in mind, these two products will be available to the worldwide market where much of the telecommunications infrastructures are already based on SDH/SONET or PDH standards. Together, the HPX-300-SS-T and Ethernet Him provide breakthrough levels of price/performance in the evolving telecommunications markets but allow simple, cost-effective network growth so that capital costs are more closely aligned with the revenue and returns achieved by the network operator.
